Freewheel - 01
FREEWHEEL:
Sachs / Maillard 700 Compact - 13/21 (13-14-15-16-17-19-21) narrow 7 speed - 27 mm splined removal interface (uses Campagnolo 9/10s lockring removal tool such as a Park FR-1) - 1.370" x 24 TPI English thread - 3x2x2 stepped body - Rapid Grip and Shift (RGS) individual cog tooth profiles - hardened steel / nickel plated - three notch slip fit cogs / threaded locking cog / duplex threaded cog pair - model 700 Compact ... [Yet another variation with respect to what would have typically been affixed as stock on a Crescent Pepita model 320 of this vintage. Whereas this bicycle came with rear dropouts spaced at a traditional 122 mm and would have originally been equipped with a conventional French made Cyclo 14/21 tooth 5 speed freewheel, I made a very conscious decision to spread the rear triangle out to 126 mm so that I might be able to run a narrow 7 speed freewheel. Initially, it had been my intention to use a near bulletproof version of the early 1980’s Maillard 700 Compact from my store of miscellaneous spare parts. However, I was fortunate enough to eventually come across a late 1980’s Sachs / Maillard 700 Compact 7 speed freewheel incorporating their improved Rapid Grip and Shift (RGS) cog tooth profile (...the front of each individual tooth is machine beveled to make it thin at the top and thicker at the bottom and the top of each tooth has a "V" shaped groove running lengthwise with the back half of each tooth being crimped at its top pushing the "V" on the back closed and raising the tooth height slightly at the rear) commonly found on their later Advance Rider Index System (ARIS) offerings and which also just so happened to have the exact combination of individual cog tooth counts I sought.]
