[Maillard 700 Professional series pedals were introduced to market in 1975 as yet another supplement to the existing 700 Professional series of cycling components, and from the onset, were made available in three distinct configurations which shared the same structural design and internal piece parts. The first of these were designated the 700 RC and were distinguished by their having heavy duty chrome plated steel cages – and this type was never used on any version of Peugeot PY-10 bicycle whether it be commercialized or genuine team issue. The other two versions of Maillard 700 Professional series pedals each featured lightweight aluminum alloy cages, specifically, the 700 RA having a Clear anodized Silver finish and the 700 RN having a Black anodized surface treatment. One of the more interesting aspects of Maillard 700 design is the fact that there is no need for one to "twist" their toe straps inasmuch as the pedals themselves incorporate a rear tab with corresponding anchor screw which may be used to secure the strap in place (...this arrangement has the additional benefit of pinching the toe strap in such fashion as to hold its inner length well away from fowling with the face of the crank arm). With respect to PY-10 CP models made available to the public in 1978, the Silver hue RA type pedals were considered "standard issue" whereas the Black colored RN type were offered as a customer selectable option. In either case, any Maillard 700 pedals provisioned on a given PY-10 CP would have necessarily had spindles which were threaded consistent with the crank arms, which is to say either standard French metric or optional English / BSA threading as stipulated on its corresponding purchase order. Those pedals which originally came fitted to this particular PY-10 CP were Maillard 700 RA Professional types having a date code of "10 77" on their barrel - identical to that found in evidence on the brake caliper arms. However, those pedals were re-purposed to my 1977 PY-10 CP team bike replica project as most of the Peugeot-Esso-Michelin riders used that type during the 1977 season, and in their stead, a pair of Maillard 700 RN Professional pedals having an only slightly earlier date coding of "07 77" have been selected for use here. As for those aluminum toe clips and straps, the matched Christophe "Z" pairing made their debut in 1976, ultimately proving to be the lightest combination of their kind ever mass marketed to the cycling public, and they were thereafter standard equipment on all Peugeot PY-10 models up until introduction of the PY-10 FC in 1983.]
